These two words sit next to each other on a lot of packaging here, and they do not mean the same thing.

What “brightening” describes

Evenness and light reflection. A product described this way is generally aimed at:

  • Post-inflammatory marks — the brown or red patches left behind after a spot heals
  • Sun-driven pigmentation
  • Dullness from dehydration and a build-up of dead surface cells

The ingredients with reasonable evidence here are niacinamide, vitamin C, azelaic acid, alpha arbutin and retinoids. They work on excess pigment — the marks that were not there before — and they work slowly, over months.

Your underlying skin tone is not a mark. It is not something these ingredients are formulated to change, and no amount of consistent use will change it.

What “whitening” claims

A change in your natural skin colour. We do not stock products that make this claim, and not only as a matter of taste:

  • It does not work as advertised. The evidence for altering baseline tone with a topical cosmetic is poor.
  • The products that do appear to work often contain things they should not. Testing of skin-lightening creams across South Asia has repeatedly found undeclared mercury and unlabelled potent steroids. Both cause real harm with sustained use, and the harm is often not reversible.
  • Unbranded and repackaged creams are the highest risk, which is exactly the category sold most aggressively.

If a cream produces a dramatic change in a few weeks, that is information about what is in it.

How to read a label honestly

  • “May help improve the appearance of dark spots” — a reasonable claim
  • “Reduces the look of uneven tone over 12 weeks” — reasonable, and specific about time
  • “Fairness in 7 days” — not a claim a cosmetic can keep
  • “Permanently removes pigmentation” — not a claim anyone can keep

What actually fades a dark spot

Sunscreen, every day, for months. It is unglamorous and it is the single biggest factor. Any serum you layer on top is working against daily re-exposure if you skip it.

Then patience: three to six months, with a photo from day one so you are judging evidence rather than memory.

If a patch of pigmentation is new, spreading, changing shape or appeared without a spot preceding it, that is a dermatologist's question, not a shopping question.
