Ingredient
Salicylic Acid (BHA)
Oil-soluble, so it works inside a pore rather than only on the surface.
Also on labels as: BHA · Beta hydroxy acid
What it is
A beta hydroxy acid. Unlike glycolic or lactic acid it dissolves in oil, which lets it get into a pore and loosen what is blocking it. That single property is why it is the standard answer for blackheads and congestion.
Who it suits
Blackheads, closed bumps, an oily T-zone, and skin that gets congested rather than inflamed. Less useful for the red, sore kind of spot — that is benzoyl peroxide's job.
Strength and how to start
0.5% to 2%. Two or three nights a week, not nightly — this is the single most common mistake with BHA, and nightly use is how people end up with a stinging, flaking face and conclude their skin is sensitive. Build up only if two months of three nights a week has clearly stalled.
Pairs with
On the nights you are not using BHA. Oil and congestion improve from both directions.
An exfoliated barrier needs rebuilding. This is the moisturiser to use alongside.
Be careful with
Together on one night is how a barrier gets damaged. Alternate nights, and give yourself a night off between.
Scrubs
You are already exfoliating. A scrub on top of an acid is two exfoliants and a sore face.
In Bangladesh
Humid months bring more congestion than dryness here, so BHA tends to earn its place from June to September and can often drop to once a week in the dry winter weeks. Adjust the frequency with the season rather than keeping it fixed all year.
Common questions
Is purging real?
With an ingredient that speeds up cell turnover, yes — congestion that was already forming surfaces sooner. It should be in the places you normally break out and should settle within four to six weeks. New spots in new places, or stinging, is irritation, not purging.
Can I use it if I am on adapalene?
Not on the same night. Many people do well with a retinoid on three nights and nothing else active on the others. If you are already using adapalene for breakouts, adding BHA is usually unnecessary.
