Ingredient

Zinc Oxide (Mineral Sunscreen)

The filter that sits on the surface — and the one reactive skin usually gets on with.

Also on labels as: Mineral filter · Physical sunscreen · Titanium dioxide

What it is

A mineral UV filter that sits on the surface rather than being absorbed. It covers both UVB and UVA, which is unusual for a single filter, and it is the one most often recommended for skin that reacts to chemical filters.

Who it suits

Reactive skin, skin on a retinoid, and anyone whose eyes sting with chemical sunscreens. If neither applies, a modern chemical or hybrid filter is usually lighter and easier to wear — and the sunscreen you reapply beats the one you admire.

Strength and how to start

Look at the SPF and the UVA mark, not the zinc percentage. SPF 50 with PA++++ (or the European UVA-in-a-circle) is what you want. Two finger-lengths for face and neck; almost everyone applies too little, and half the amount is far less than half the protection.

Pairs with

  • Vitamin C

Antioxidant under filter is the standard morning pair.

  • Niacinamide

    Sits comfortably underneath.

Be careful with

  • Nothing — but mind the layering

Sunscreen goes last, over everything else. A serum applied on top of it disturbs the film you just laid down.

In Bangladesh

Mineral filters leave more of a white cast on deeper skin tones, and in Bangladesh's heat a thick mineral sunscreen is one most people quietly stop wearing. A tinted mineral formula solves the cast; a light chemical or hybrid solves the weight. Either is better than the one left in a drawer.

Common questions

Is mineral safer than chemical?

Both are regulated and both are considered safe to use. Mineral is often better tolerated by reactive skin. The meaningful difference for most people is comfort, and comfort decides whether it gets worn.

Do I need sunscreen indoors?

If you sit near a window, yes — UVA passes through glass, and it is the range associated with pigmentation and early lines. In a windowless room, no.
