A Beginner's Guide to Korean Skincare
Ten steps is a myth for most people. What K-beauty actually offers is texture, tolerance and a gentler pace.

The ten-step routine made a good headline and a poor recommendation. What Korean skincare is genuinely good at is more useful than the step count.
Three things K-beauty does well
Texture. Essences, ampoules and light gel creams sit comfortably in humid weather in a way that many Western creams do not.
Tolerance. Formulas tend to prioritise comfort — centella, panthenol, heartleaf — which suits skin that reacts easily.
Sunscreen. Korean sunscreens are, as a category, more pleasant to wear. That translates directly into more consistent use.
A sensible Korean-style routine
- Morning: gentle cleanser, hydrating toner, light serum, moisturiser, sunscreen
- Evening: balm cleanse, gel cleanse, toner, essence, treatment (a few nights a week), moisturiser
That is five or six steps, not ten, and several are optional.
Where essences fit
An essence is a light hydrating layer between toner and serum. It is not essential. It is, however, the step most people who love K-beauty would keep if they had to drop everything else.
Ingredients worth knowing
- Centella asiatica — calming, in almost everything
- Snail secretion filtrate — lightweight hydration with a distinctive slip
- Propolis — richer, honey-like, good for dry skin
- Rice extract — softening, traditional, gentle
Start with two products, not ten.
